Fluxes can convert infusible compounds at a certain temperature into other compounds that melt at that temperature, playing a crucial role in the fire assay process.
Fire assay is a traditional and highly accurate method for analyzing precious metals in ores and concentrates. The flux is a key component, combining with mineral samples containing precious metals and heating in a furnace to form a lead (Pb) button. Further processing of this button through the process of cupellation produces a prill containing the precious metals present in the original sample.
·Litharge: A key ingredient of the assay flux and can be used as a collector, flux, desulfurizer, and solvent.
·Soda ash (sodium carbonate): A powerful basic assay flux that helps desulfurize the sample and lowers the melting temperature of the mixture by forming a eutectic.
·Borax: Reduces the melting point of all slags and is an excellent solvent for metal oxides.
·Silicon dioxide (SiO2): The strongest acidic reagent, combines with metal oxides to form silicates.
·Silver nitrate: Used in specific assays where the presence of silver needs to be controlled or detected.
