Importance of Proper Sampling

In the field of mineral analysis and fire assay, accurate sampling and meticulous sample preparation are fundamental to obtaining reliable results. The process of mineral sample collection and preparation involves several key steps designed to ensure that the final sample accurately represents the entire mineral deposit. Each step must be carefully executed to avoid contamination, loss of material, or bias in the results. Proper documentation and adherence to safety protocols are also essential throughout the process.

Field Sampling

Field sampling is the first and most crucial step in obtaining a representative mineral sample. It involves selecting specific locations within the deposit where samples will be collected.

Transportation and Crushing

Once collected, the samples must be transported to the laboratory without contamination or degradation. Use jaw crushers, roll crushers, or hammer mills depending on the hardness and size of the material.

Splitting

Splitting divides the crushed material into smaller, manageable portions while maintaining representativeness. Common techniques include riffle splitting, cone and quartering, or mechanical splitters.

Grinding

Grinding further reduces the particle size to a fine powder, which is necessary for many analytical techniques. Ball mills, disc mills, or mortar and pestle systems can be used depending on the material properties.
